Did you know your hormones might be a real reason your hair is thinning?
One of the biggest culprit is DHT. DHT is a stronger form of testosterone that your body naturally makes. The problem is, people who are sensitive to it, DHT attaches to hair follicles and slowly shrinks them. Over time, the hair grows back thinner, shorter, and eventually may stop growing in that area at all. That is why often you see recession at the hairline or thinning at the crown, classic DHT patterns.
When you are under constant stress, your body raises levels of cortisol, your main stress hormone. High cortisol for too long can push more of your hair into the shedding phase. You might notice extra hair in the shower, on your brush, or on your pillow a few moths after a stressful period. Stress can also tighten the scalp, reduce blood flow, and affect the nutrients reaching your hair follicles. So if your hair is shedding more than usual it might not be your hair follicles.
Your thyroid also plays a major role. When your thyroid is underactive, hair can grow slower, become drier, and thin all over the scalp not just in one patch. When it is overactive you can also get diffuse thinning, plus hair that feel finer and more fragile. You might notice changes in your hair along with things like fatigue, weight changes, feeling cold or hot easily or mood shifts. If you hair has changed and nothing in your routine explains it, it might be worth checking your thyroid, not just your shampoo.
Oestrogen is one of the hormones that helps keep hair in its growth phase for longer, so it feels fuller and thicker when levels are balanced. When the oestrogen drops like after childbirth, around peri menopause, or the coming off hormonal birth control more hair can shift into the shedding phase. You might notice increased shedding in the shower or on your brush, and overall your hair can feel less dense than before. If your hair changed after a big hormonal milestone, your oestrogen levels might be part of the story.
